1. Water Supplies Are Becoming Less Predictable

An April 2026 joint federal advisory described actors affiliated with Iran exploiting programmable logic controllers connected to the internet across critical infrastructure, including water and wastewater systems. More broadly, cyberattacks that disrupt drinking water or wastewater operations have mounted in recent years.

Water utilities are increasingly recognized as critical infrastructure targets. Earlier incidents, from the 2021 Oldsmar, Florida, intrusion to the 2024 American Water cyberattack, demonstrate that risks can affect both operational and business systems.

Utilities need trained operators, centralized monitoring, industry best practices, local control redundancy, clear response procedures, and coordination with public agencies.
