Challenges
- Overcoming inadequate water supply
- Addressing environmental risks associated with mining activities
- Ensuring operational resilience through reliable water supply
Seven Seas provides water management solutions and highest capacity reverse osmosis plant in Peru
One of the primary challenges faced by the Miski Mayo mine was the inadequacy of its water supply management system. In 2010, a water supply contract was awarded to a construction company lacking the requisite expertise in industrial water treatment. Consequently, the absence of stringent performance obligations in the contract led to disruptions in water supply, causing operational halts within the mine.
Recognizing the critical need for expert water management solutions, Compañía Minera Miski Mayo S.R.L. sought the assistance of Seven Seas Water Group. In November 2016, Seven Seas acquired Aguas de Bayovar SAC, marking a turning point in the mine’s water management strategy. Since then, Seven Seas has been solely responsible for meeting the diverse water requirements of the Miski Mayo Mining Company, including desalinated water, seawater, and potable water. Notably, the potable water supply caters to the drinking needs of approximately 2,000 mine workers, underscoring its significance for human welfare.
Setting Standards for Industrial Water
Upon acquiring Aguas de Bayóvar SAC, Seven Seas immediately implemented a plant improvement scheme, which was quickly executed with rapid results. Upgrades were made to the intake, pretreatment, and controls systems to meet Seven Seas standards, and other major investments were made including 100% membrane replacement and 100% cartridge filter system overhaul. The pretreatment design was further improved through enhancements to the dissolved air flotation (DAF) design and operations, resulting in an 80% improvement to the feed water quality entering the reverse osmosis system. This success story highlights Seven Seas’ capability to acquire a struggling plant and restore customer confidence, as Seven Seas has met all of Miski Mayo’s water needs since the acquisition with 100% contractual compliance.
The Miski Mayo reverse osmosis facility is the largest plant in Perú, underscoring the scale and impact of this collaborative effort. The successful implementation of advanced water treatment infrastructure has not only mitigated environmental risks associated with mining activities but has also bolstered operational resilience. Since acquiring the plant, Seven Seas has tackled complex water management challenges in the mining sector by providing continuous investments and optimizing operational protocols.By leveraging expertise and investing in cutting-edge technology, Seven Seas has not only safeguarded the sustainability of mining operations but has also set a precedent for responsible water stewardship in Perú’s mining landscape.
